The first days of a puppy in the house - what the owner needs to know
Do not forget that when you bring a puppy to your house, you will separate him from his mother, brothers and sisters - that is, with everyone with whom he had fun and was safe. And your life at this moment is changing irrevocably. As a result, both the baby and you have stress.
When is the best time to take a puppy?
It is best to take the puppy on Saturday or Sunday morning - so you will have at your disposal the whole weekend to get a little used to each other. And during the day, the baby will have time to at least a little accept the separation from his mother, get tired of new impressions, and more likely that the night will go more or less calm (although a new household will whine anyway).
What to take from the breeder
Ask the breeder to give something reminiscent of his home to the puppy’s dowry. It can be a small toy or a piece of bedding. Such an object (more precisely, its smell) will help the puppy to adapt in a new place and make the new house closer.
How to transport a puppy to a new home
Carry your puppy in a carry, bag or in your arms. Please note that until the pet is vaccinated, it must not be let go of the hands on the street or allowed to communicate with other dogs. Protect your baby from drafts in transport.
Preparing a place for a puppy in a new house
Even before the puppy settles with you, he needs to equip a quiet place for rest and sleep, for example, a house or a couch. Not in a draft, not in an aisle where a baby can be accidentally hit. It is advisable, not in the hallway - the puppy should feel the presence of the owner, see him, and not feel like a forgotten orphan. Ideally, this place should be fixed to a four-legged friend for life.
Addictive puppy to the owner
To make the puppy more accustomed to you, put something from your wardrobe in his house. You can sacrifice an old sock. The thing must be worn and not washed, so the dog will feel that you are always with her.
How to train a puppy to the toilet
Near the house, put a special diaper or newspapers or place a dog tray to accustom the puppy to cleanliness. It is recommended to wet the edge of the diaper in the urine so that the puppy understands why it is lying there.
Feeding a puppy in the early days in a new home
In the first weeks the puppy is fed in the same way as the breeder fed. Separation from mom, sisters and brothers is already enough stress to add upset stomach to it. If you later decide to change the diet, do it gradually.
A bowl of clean fresh water must be available. In general, it is better to place the bowls on a special stand, so that while eating and drinking the puppy's head is at back level. The height of the stand increases as the pet grows.
The puppy should have its own bowl in a certain place and the established feeding regimen. But before feeding the puppy, place it near the bowl, hold it a bit (literally 1 - 2 seconds to start), and then give an authorizing command and allow it to eat.
Rules for a puppy
On the first day, set the rules for the puppy. If you can’t do something, it’s a taboo from the very beginning. After all, if today you can nibble slippers, and tomorrow you can’t, the dog will just get confused, and nothing good will come of such an upbringing. Moreover, the rules must be respected by all family members.
It’s best not to punish the puppy for “bad” behavior, but to ignore it. Remember that punishment is also reinforcement. But do not forget to praise for the right behavior! Even for the fact that the puppy is calmly lying in its "house".
Puppy Safety in a New Home
Prepare the toys. You can not give the baby tweeters that he can swallow, or plastic toys that are easily bursting.
Make sure that objects that your four-legged friend can swallow are not lying on the chairs and floor.
If you do not want to share a bed with your dog all your life, you should not take a puppy under a blanket even on the first day. No matter how plaintively he was not worried and whined.
You can not put a puppy on high chairs and a sofa. The pet is still small, and the jump is fraught with injury.
Do not raise the puppy by the legs or under the stomach. It is correct to pick up - with one hand under the front legs, in the chest area, with the second hand under the ass.
Do not cover the puppy in the room alone. It is advisable not to lose sight of him in the early days.
Use every opportunity to attract the attention of the baby, call him by name, caress. It is better to do this when the pet has just woken up or been distracted, having forgotten about your existence. You can give a treat from time to time.
Walk the puppy in the first days in a new house
Before you start walking the puppy, make sure that all vaccinations are done and the necessary quarantine is passed. Check with the breeder. Only after that can you begin to take the pet out onto the street.
Be sure to teach your dog a leash before starting the walk. Use the quarantine period to good effect! If on the first walk you put on a dog collar with a leash, without first having accustomed the baby, he will simply be scared. The first walk - already very stressful, do not aggravate the situation.
An important stage is socialization. It begins in quiet, sparsely populated places, and gradually the number of incentives increases. If the puppy is frightened, do not focus on this and do not console - this will only reinforce his fear. Fright is better to ignore. And when you see that the pet is walking calmly and wagging its tail, be sure to praise it.
