Airedale health and disease prevention
Airedale Health, as a rule, does not cause concern to the owner. Airedale dogs are fairly hardy and healthy dogs. They are almost not susceptible to the diseases that other breeds suffer, and if they do get sick, they suffer the disease in a milder form. But a frivolous attitude to the well-being of the pet is still unacceptable.
Signs of a healthy Airedale
- activity,
- playfulness
- curiosity,
- good appetite,
- shiny eyes
- beautiful coat.
If your pet shows weakness, indifference, loss of appetite, contact your veterinarian immediately.

The main health problems of Airedale terriers: hip dysplasia, raw eczema (hot spots), melanoma, demodicosis, Addison’s disease (hyperadrenocortism), hypothyroidism, Von Willebrand’s disease, dilated cardiomyopathy, eyelid inversion (entropion), chronic superficial keratitis, dystrophic keratitis (distant) cornea of the eye and progressive retinal atrophy.
It is advisable to clarify whether the parents have test results for hereditary diseases characteristic of Airedale terriers.
- Hyperuricosuria is a hereditary disease associated with the accumulation of uric acid salts and the formation of stones.
- Dog degenerative myelopathy is a severe, progressive neurodegenerative disease that causes hind limb paralysis. It is associated with impaired functioning of spinal cord motor neurons due to the simplification (degeneration) of their nerve endings. The disease begins with an almost imperceptible weakness of one or both hind legs. Then it becomes difficult to get up from a lying or sitting position. The dog periodically loses balance, coordination is disturbed, after which paralysis develops.
