At first, this breed was called "Don", then - "Russian". Later, by analogy with the Canadian Sphinx, the name "Don Sphinx" appeared.

History of the Don Sphynx breed

The history of the Don Sphynx breed began in Rostov-on-Don (Russia) in 1987. The progenitor of the breed was a homeless kitten found on the street and almost lost its coat. At first, the absence of hair was perceived as a symptom of the disease, but hairlessness was quite resistant to treatment, moreover, it was transmitted to the next generation. Indeed, unlike the Conadian counterpart, the Don sphinx has a dominant gene for hairlessness, which means that it is highly likely that it will appear in future generations, even if Don Sphynxes are crossed with “ordinary” cats.

To strengthen vitality and increase the number of Don Sphynxes, they were bred with European Shorthair and Siberian cats. However, crossbreeding with other breeds is not allowed now.

An important milestone in the history of the Don Sphynx breed is the recognition and approval of the standard. The preliminary breed standard was approved in 1994, and two years later the Don Sphinxes were registered with the WCF.
